Chapter 3 notes Transition Notes

Editing is nothing without the transitions, these are what hold the structure of the video together, there are many different transition types here are a few examples.

Split edit, L Cut is where dialogue cuts over the action and the response of the person or the scene with the action is shown through the clips with the continuation of speech, basically the visual layer kept the same with different cuts of audio, or different visual cuts with the layer of audio kept the same.

The jump cut is similar the audio layer would stay the same except it being one continuous shot of vision its split into many different angles of the one scene or two different scene put together.

Parallel editing is the use of two scene happening at the same time to give the viewer the belief of these events happening at the exact same time.

The wipe is a more corny transition effect used in the 80s most commonly associated with the star wars films this is used so frequently normally to cut a still scene together with the next clip swiping over the previous one.

Thematic editing is the composition of random clips which are not in anyway connected to convey and get the audience to figure what is going on, this is more commonly used in mysterious films.

Cutting Edge Notes, History and Development of Post-production

Editing is the montage of clips a french word meaning place together, montage works because the viewers meaning and understanding of the scene can reflect a range of different emotions depending on this.

The earliest editing started in the early 1900s, originally editing was done by hand by cutting, Edward Porter was one of the first editor in 1903 The life of an american fireman, the first film to use different shots which were cut from film strip and re-arranged.

D.W. Griffiths was the first known editor to explore a range of different editing techniques, orphans of the storm 1921 and the great train robbery, through cutting the film strip and running through the projector, his techniques are still being used today, editing became knowns as the silent art were the more unnoticeable the transitions the better. The smiths were another well known editing couple after the Griffiths.

The earliest editing machine in 1940s was called the movieola was a like big sewing machine it was called this because early editors were mostly female cause it was believed they wouldnt ruin it compared to men.

From 1970s onwards video editing was introduced and made life far easier.

200 hours of motion picture time

Final Cut Pro was used in directing cold mountain

Einzenstein was a russian film editor

The most important aspect is building climax and split the film between action and tension.

relationship between the director and editor is so important its like a marriage.

The word joins refer back to when clips were cut and put together by hand for example fades, dissolves.
